ADRIAN, Mich. -- The No. 3 Adrian College Women's ACHA Division 1 hockey team was swept by No. 1 Liberty University over the weekend, losing to the top-ranked Flames 3-2 on Friday, and 4-1 on Saturday.
The Bulldogs and Flames met for the 31st time in program history on Friday, fresh off of the first ACHA National Ranking of the season, which was released earlier this week. The Flames, who came in to Adrian with a 5-0-1 record, managed to squeeze by the Bulldogs once again after two late power play goals in the third period.
Makenzie Villiard and
Rhea Peterson both scored on the power play for the Bulldogs in the second period while goaltender
Chloe Burt made 24 saves in the opening game for the home team. The Bulldogs out shot the Flames 37-24 in the contest, but it was the Flames who capitalized late on their power play opportunities to pull ahead and secure the win.
On Saturday night, the Bulldogs were hopeful to split the series, but the Flames had other plans. Adrian had out shot the Flames again, this time 38-22, but Liberty managed to score three times while even strength and once short-handed to go up 4-0 before Adrian's
Sydney White put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with just over six minutes to go in the game. Burt stopped 18 shots for Adrian, while
Macy Piche collected the lone assist on the Bulldog tally.
The WD1 Bulldogs will be back in action next weekend as they head on the road to Missouri for three games. The Bulldogs will face off against No. 7 McKendree University on Friday, November 10 at 8:30 PM EST, and then battle with No. 5 Maryville University on the 11th and 12th, with puck drops being at 6:00 PM EST on Saturday and 2:00 PM EST on Sunday.
