ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College women's basketball team saw its two game win streak come to an end Wednesday evening in a 67-47 defeat to Alma College.
How It Happened
The women's basketball team shot off to a quick start in the beginning phases of the game tonight, by going on a 10-4 run in the first five minutes of the quarter. The run was extremely balanced and Adrian would put on an excellent passing display. During the run,
Kourtney Crawford,
Kylie Skidmore,
Makayla Clement, and
Ashlyn Weatherly all scored for the women's basketball team.
The Bulldogs would see their largest lead of the night after the 10-4 run. The freshman Weatherly would conclude the run by putting the women's basketball team up by six with 4:41 remaining in the first quarter.
At the half, Alma and Adrian College were knotted up at 26-24 in favor of Alma. The third quarter saw an explosion of points, as both teams combined for a total of 38 for the quarter. Down eight with over seven minutes to go in the third, the balanced scoring of
Kiara Wernette, Weatherly, and Clement brought the Bulldogs back to lead 35-34 with 5:48 remaining. The lead was short-lived as the women's basketball team trailed 46-42 heading into the fourth quarter. In the fourth, the Bulldogs went cold and were outscored 21-5 in the final frame of play.
Jordan Phillips would see her three-point streak snapped tonight after shooting 0-1 from distance. The junior out of Midland high school had made at least one three-pointer in 13 consecutive games before tonight, a career-best from long range.
Top Dawgs
The sophomore Clement scored a team-high 10 points tonight to lead the Bulldogs. With her 10 points, Clement notched her third time this season that she would score double digit points in consecutive games. Additionally, freshman
Ashlyn Weatherly shot a perfect 3-3 on her way to scoring six points and grabbing five boards.
MIAA Tournament Implications
With three games remaining in the 2023 regular season, the Bulldogs sit in fifth place in the MIAA standings. Heading into tonight's matchup, the Bulldogs had maintained a 1.5 game advantage over the sixth-place Scotts. With tonight's loss, the women's basketball team now has a .5 game lead with two games remaining for Alma and three for Adrian.
