Baseball Splits Doubleheader to Conclude Trip to North Carolina

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Adrian College baseball team finished up its trip to North Carolina on Saturday. Due to projected weather in the forecast for Sunday, Adrian's schedule switched from a single game Saturday and a single game Sunday to a Saturday doubleheader. Adrian dropped the first game of the day to Montclair State by a score of 4-2, but bounced back against Maryville College winning 6-4.
 
GAME 1
  • Montclair State got on the board in the third inning on a two-run homer.
  • In the fourth inning, Adrian made it a one-run game on a sacrifice fly from Don Goodes.
  • In the seventh, Andrew Atherton doubled in a run to tie the game 2-2.
  • Montclair State scored a pair of runs in the eighth on a home run to right field and a RBI double to defeat Adrian 4-2.
  • Adrian totaled six hits in game one.
  • Jakob Charles got the start for Adrian throwing five inning allowing two runs on three hits with six strikeouts. Jaxon Clark appeared in relief throwing three innings allowing two runs on three hits with four strikeouts.
GAME 2
  • Maryville took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on a RBI double and a RBI single.
  • Adrian responded in the bottom half of the inning with a RBI double from Adrian Gutierrez and a RBI single from Jakob Charles.
  • In the fifth, Maryville took a 4-2 lead on a two-run homer.
  • Ryan Davis hit a two-run bomb of his own in the bottom of the fifth inning which was followed by another Bulldog homer from Edward Wagner to take the lead.
  • In the sixth inning, Travis Liford hit a ball to left field which was dropped by the left fielder allowing Liford to hit a little league inside the park home run and pull ahead 6-4.
  • Don Goodes started on the mound for Adrian throwing 3.2 innings allowing two runs on three hits with six strikeouts. Griffin Firestine earned the win in relief. Lincoln Lipinski and Ryan Davis appeared in relief with the pitching staff combining for 15 strikeouts.
UP NEXT
The Bulldogs will head back north and travel to Cleveland, Ohio next weekend where they will take on Case Western Reserve University, Denison University, and Baldwin Wallace in non-conference games. The first game of the weekend is scheduled for 4:00 PM on Friday, March 17 at Case Western.
