ADRIAN, Mich. – During Friday's 3-1 victory over Olivet, the Bulldogs honored senior Jake Witt on senior night and Chase Heuer, who became the second player in Adrian College men's volleyball program history to total over 100 career service aces.
How It Happened
After trailing 9-7 early in the first set on Friday night, the Bulldogs shot off on an 8-0 run to take a 15-9 lead over the Comets. During the run, the senior Witt recorded a kill, while Olivet would follow with three errors. After taking an 11-9 lead over the Comets, Beck Fieldhouse would record three service aces and Heuer would secure a kill, to give the Bulldogs a 15-9 lead over their foes. However, Olivet would storm back on a 15-8 advantage to take a 24-23 lead. The Bulldogs would tie the set again at 24 all, after a kill by Heuer from an assisting David Barona. However, the Comets would score the final two points of the set and take a 1-0 lead over the Bulldogs. After the Bulldogs lost the first set 26-24, the men's volleyball program stormed back to take three consecutive sets Friday evening.
During the second set of play, the Bulldogs took command and opened the set with a 14-3 advantage. Bulldogs Andrew Gawrisch, Fieldhouse, Witt, and Heuer, recorded kills during the scoring barrage. With the help of errors by Olivet, the Bulldogs would expediently take an 11-point lead during the second set. Later in the set after kills by Gawrisch and Heuer, the Bulldogs had Olivet on the ropes, until the Comets swung back with a 6-0 run of their own to cut Adrian's lead to seven. The Bulldogs maintained composure and closed out the set off of a service error by Olivet and a service ace from Heuer.
The third set was an all-out dogfight, as both teams struggled to gain momentum over each other. Midway through the set, Heuer would record another service ace to give the men's volleyball team a 10-7 lead. Over the next couple of minutes, both teams would exchange points. After the Comets took advantage of a Bulldog service error, the men's volleyball team saw their lead cut to two at 21-19. Despite the slim margins, the Bulldogs would not falter. Adrian College would conclude the third after scoring four straight points to secure the set victory.
In the fourth and final set Friday, after leading by one at 9-8, the Bulldogs were able to give themselves some breathing room by completing a 10-3 run to take a 19-11 lead. Olivet soon looked to take the momentum from the Bulldogs after picking up points to cut Adrian's lead to seven, however, Coach Jose Soto had other plans and made tactical adjustments by subbing in freshman Jackson Palmitier. The freshman out of Hudsonville took advantage of his opportunity and committed two efficient kills to keep the Bulldogs at bay, propelling Adrian College to a 24-16 lead in the process. In response to the threatening lead by Adrian College, the Comets rallied and frantically scored five straight points to cut the Bulldog's lead to three at 24-21. Remaining composed, Carson Bell would record the game-winning kill to secure Adrian College's second conference victory of the season.
