ADRIAN, Mich. — The Adrian College men's volleyball team dropped Saturday's match against Mount Union three sets to zero to begin play in the month of March.
How It Happened
In the beginning phases of set one, both teams exchanged points, until Mount Union recorded an expedient 4-1 run to lead the Bulldogs 14-8. Beck Fieldhouse would respond and recorded two kills during an Adrian 3-0 run to help pull the Bulldogs within three of Mount Union. However, the Bulldog's foes would continue to counter, increasing their lead to 22-16. The men's volleyball team struck back and cut the deficit to two at 22-20 after recording a 5-1 run after capitalizing on Mount Union errors and kills by Branden Gula, Fieldhouse, and a service ace from Chase Heuer. However, Mount Union would score five straight to take a 1-0 lead over the Bulldogs.
In the second, the Bulldogs saw two 3-0 runs, but they would never lead throughout the entirety of the set. During the third and final set, the men's volleyball team quickly developed a 4-1 lead after kills by Gula, Heuer, and Fieldhouse. Mount Union counted, out-scoring the Bulldogs 17-11 to take an 18-15 lead in the late stages of the set. Zach Molnar was able to stop the run by scoring two straight, recording back-to-back kills from an assisting Andrew Gawrisch. After a kill by Heuer, the deficit closed in on one at 19-18. In the closing phases of the set, Molnar, Heuer, and Fieldhouse recorded kills. However, the rally was not enough, as the Bulldogs dropped their second straight to Mount Union.
In the third and final set, the Bulldogs would start hot, taking a 4-1 lead after kills from Heuer, Gula, and Fieldhouse. After Mount Union fought back to take the lead, the Bulldogs scored four straight to claim a 12-9 advantage. The men's volleyball team fought hard down the stretch: After a kill by Fieldhouse and capitalizing on a service error, the Bulldogs would tie the game up at 15 all. Later in the set, after a kill by Heuer, Adrian climbed within one at 19-18. Despite the two runs the Bulldogs created for themselves, Mount Union would close out the game on a six-to-three advantage to win the match.
