ONU Halts Women’s Lacrosse Win Streak At Three

ADA, Ohio — The Adrian College women's lacrosse team saw their three game win streak come to an end Wednesday night against Ohio Northern University. Freshman Melaina Springer tied a game high three goals Wednesday, improving her season total to 15 goals scored on the year.

How It Happened

The Bulldogs started strong in the beginning minutes of play Wednesday evening. During the game's first two and a half minutes Emily Crager would score the opening goal of the game off an assisting Jenna Anheuser. After stopping an Ohio Northern attack, the Bulldogs would easily possess the ball in their opponent's third of the field as they built up their offensive attack. Spacing out the Polar Bear defense, Anheuser would backtrack and create space for the Bulldogs. Anheuser found her teammate Crager cutting into the center of the field, who would turn, shoot, and score for the Bulldogs. Despite the early lead, the Polar Bears quickly countered and scored three straight to conclude the quarter. At the end of the first, the women's lacrosse team trailed Ohio Northern University 3-1.

After allowing a goal with 9:38 remaining in the quarter, the Bulldogs would draw back-to-back fouls, with one setting up the senior Anheuser for a free position attempt. During her attempt, Anheuser stepped up and ripped one into the back of the net, converting her fourth goal of the season. With 8:43 remaining in the half, Anheuser's goal brought the Bulldogs within two with a score of 4-2. A minute and a half later, with 7:16 remaining in the quarter, the Bulldogs would counter again when Springer converted on a free position attempt to pull Adrian College within two, at 5-3 in favor of ONU. However, the Bulldogs quickly conceded three additional goals. Senior Joscelyn Potter would stop the ONU run after notching her fifth goal of the season off an assisting Springer. The Bulldogs now within four, trailed the Polar Bears 8-4 heading into the break.

The women's lacrosse team would tack on their fifth goal of the game during a man-up situation with about seven and a half minutes remaining in the third. During the play, Springer would score her second goal of the game off an assisting Zoe Weber. Later with 7:35 remaining in the contest, Springer scored her 15th goal of the season and completed her third game where she would accumulate a hat trick.

Top Dawgs

After her second goal with 7:35 remaining in the third, the freshman Springer would complete her fourth straight multi-scoring game of her career. Springer entered tonight's matchup ranked 52nd in goals scored in NCAA DIII women's lacrosse with 12 on the season. With her three goals tonight, Springer is off to a hot start in her freshman campaign, scoring an average of 3.75 goals per contest in four games.
