INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – The Adrian College club softball team traveled to Indianapolis this past weekend to compete in the Indy Invite, delivering a strong performance across three games.
In their first game against Loyola Chicago, Adrian came out swinging, securing a 12-4 victory in just five innings. Sophomore Elizabeth Grady opened the scoring in the first inning, crossing home plate on a wild pitch. Freshman Sara Kosal followed suit, scoring on another wild pitch to put Adrian ahead 2-0. Freshman Kyleigh McClanahan's single to right field brought two more runners home, capping off a four-run first inning.
In the third inning, freshman Courtney Robertson tripled, driving in freshman Michelle Hoffman, while freshman Greer Simpson singled to bring home Robertson, increasing Adrian's lead to 6-1. Junior Alexis Hart-Bucher added to the score with a perfectly executed bunt single, and a fielder's choice by Kosal extended the lead to seven. Adrian kept the pressure on, with Simpson's sacrifice fly and Hart-Bucher's RBI single in the fourth inning. To seal the win, Kosal tripled to left field, allowing Grady to score, enacting the mercy rule for the Bulldogs.
In their second game against the University of Michigan, freshman Brianna Scott kicked things off with a two-run single. Michigan responded with one run in the third, but junior Jocelyn Schuster's two-run double in the same inning widened Adrian's lead. Later in the fifth, Robertson's double drove in Schuster to tie the game. Despite a tense back-and-forth battle, Michigan put up three runs in the ninth inning. Adrian rallied with two runs in the bottom of the ninth but ultimately fell short, losing 10-9.
In the third game of the tournament, Adrian faced the University of Iowa. Senior Haley Holmes started strong for the Bulldogs, singling to right to drive in Scott and give Adrian an early three-run lead. In the third inning, Hart-Bucher's double to left brought in sophomore Allison Bell to tie the game at 4-4. However, despite their efforts, Adrian couldn't hold off Iowa, losing 8-4 to close out the weekend.
