MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO. -- The No. 2 Adrian College Men's ACHA Division 1 hockey team took down No. 7 Liberty University in the quarterfinal round of the National Championship Tournament on Sunday, coming out on top as 4-2 winners to advance to the semifinal round.
The Bulldogs were hot out of the gate, scoring the opening goal in the first ten minutes of the first frame on an in-alone effort from
Caleb Minns who sent it back to
Cameron Armstrong to deposit for Adrian.
Adrian would find another in the second period, this time on the power play off a great play between
Dylan Gajewski and
Sebastian Smith, who would pot the goal, sending the Bulldogs into the second intermission up 2-0.
The Flames would capitalize on a power play opportunity in the second half of the final frame to make it 2-1, but it was not long before the Bulldogs answered back with another power play goal off a one-timer from
Gavin Watt. With the score now 3-1 in favor of Adrian with less than five minutes remaining, Liberty was granted another power play opportunity in which they also capitalized on to bring it within one again. A late push was unsuccessful as Gajewski would seal it for Adrian into the empty net to secure the 4-2 victory. Goaltender,
Noah Decottignies, was remarkable for Adrian, making 31 saves in the win.
The Bulldogs advance to the semifinal round of the ACHA National Championship Tournament and will play tomorrow at the Centene Community Ice Center, with an opportunity to advance to the National Championship game. No. 2 Adrian will face off against No. 8 Ohio at 4:45 PM CST.
