MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO. -- The No. 2 Adrian College Men's ACHA Division 1 hockey team battled with No. 8 Ohio University in the ACHA Frozen Four on Monday, coming out on top with a 3-1 win to advance to the National Championship game for the second consecutive season.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring twelve minutes into the game on a breakaway opportunity from
Justin Jamer, with an assist to
Matthew DiCesare. The Bulldogs would out-shoot the Bobcats 13-8 in the first period.
Adrian and Ohio would continue the tight defensive play through the second period, but it was Ohio who answered back in the dying minutes of the period to tie it at one going into the final frame.
The Bulldogs continued to press, throwing 13 shots on goal in the third period. The throttling effort resulted in a late go-ahead goal from
Cyrus Toth, assisted by
Sam Spaedt and Jamer, to give the Bulldogs the lead with three minutes to go. Ohio would push back with an effort to tie it, but the Bulldogs held off the Bobcats with some great defense and stellar goaltending.
Cameron Armstrong would add an empty net goal to make it 3-1 and send the Bulldogs back to the National Championship game. Goaltender,
Noah Decottignies, was lights-out again, turning aside 19 shots for the victory.
Adrian advances to the National Championship game after falling short in the finale last season. Tomorrow's game marks their third appearance in the final in the last four seasons.
The Bulldogs will battle No. 5 University of Nevada Las Vegas in the championship game tomorrow night at 8:00 PM CST at the Centene Community Ice Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
