HARTFORD, Conn. – The No. 3 Adrian College NCAA men's hockey team competed in the NCAA Semifinal Round on Thursday night against the No. 2 Trinity College Bantams. The Bulldogs battled in their third consecutive Frozen Four appearance, but fell short of the National Championship Game after a 2-1 loss to Trinity.
Adrian trailed 1-0 after the first period. The Bulldogs totaled 13 shots on goal in the first period against ten from Trinity. After a high hit in front of the Trinity net, Adrian asked for an official's review for a hit to the head penalty, but came up unsuccessful after video review.
Trinity extended its lead early in the second period to 2-0. With just over six minutes to go in the period,
Bradley Somers put the Bulldogs on the board to make it 2-1.
Zachary Heintz and
Cameron Babiak recorded assists on the goal. Trinity out shot the Bulldogs 17-6 in the second period to bring the game total to 26-20 in favor of the Bantams.
The third period was a battle for both sides as each team finished scoreless in the final 20 minutes of play. Adrian earned a power play with under four minutes to go in the game, but the Trinity defense kept the puck out of the net. Adrian went on to use a timeout after pulling its goaltender, but couldn't tie the game up at two. Trinity finished with 37 shots on goal while Adrian finished with 32.
Dershahn Stewart started for Adrian in goal on Thursday night where he recorded 32 saves.
The Bulldogs finish its season with a 24-7-1 record after falling in the Semifinal Round of the NCAA Tournament. Adrian will return next season looking to make a run at a fourth consecutive Frozen Four appearance.
