NCAA Tournament First Round Preview: Men's Hockey Hosts UW-Stevens Point in First Round Matchup

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College men's hockey team returns to the NCAA Division III Men's Hockey Tournament this year after earning one of the at-large bids. The Bulldogs will host a First Round game where they will match up with UW-Stevens Point. Saturday night will serve as a rematch to last season's NCAA Quarterfinals in which the Bulldogs won 3-2 in overtime to advance to the Frozen Four. The winner of Saturday night's contest will advance to the Quarterfinals and take on the winner of St. Norbert and St. Olaf.
 
The Bulldogs sit at No. 3 in the latest Pairwise Rankings while UW-Stevens Point sits No. 8. Adrian holds a record of 22-6-1 with the help of a 16-2-0 finish in the NCHA Regular Season. The Bulldogs lost in the NCHA Harris Cup Finals to St. Norbert, but are looking for revenge and spark a National Tournament run. Stevens Point is 22-5-1 on the season after finishing 13-2 in conference and earns the Automatic Bid to the tournament after winning the WIAC.
 
Adrian has average 4.6 goals per game on the season while allowing just 1.8. The Bulldogs have been scoring heavily totaling at least four goals in ten of their last 12 contests. Adrian is 24.2% on the power play this season and 85.0 on the penalty kill.
 
The team's scoring has been spaced out this season as the Bulldogs have seven goal scorers in double digits. Adrian also has five players with over 30 points on the year. Mathew Rehding leads the team with 45 points on 16 goals and 29 assists followed by Zachary Heintz with 17 goals and 20 assists for 37 points. Jaden Shields leads the defense with 36 points on ten goals and 26 assists while Bradley Somers has 35 points and Jacob Suede totals 30.
 
Dershahn Stewart has been the top guy in goal for Adrian all season long. Stewart holds a record of 18-6-1 on the year with five shutouts. He has a 1.81 goals against average with a .934 save percentage.
 
As a team, UW-Stevens Point averages 3.6 goals per game while allowing 2.4. They've struggled a bit on the power play with a conversion rate of 18.1% while holding an 86% success rate on the penalty kill. Stevens Point sat on a five-game winning streak prior to the WIAC Tournament which was broken by a 4-4 tie in the first semifinal game.
 
The Pointers have four scorers in double digits led by Fletcher Anderson with 13 goals with 17 assists to also lead the team with 30 points. Four of Stevens Point's players sit with 20 or more points on the season. The team is led by a solid defensive core who has blocked 276 shots on the year with the team leader, Brett Humberstone, with 41.
 
The Pointers will look to Alex Proctor in goal on Saturday night who holds an 18-4-2 record on the year with one shutout. Proctor allows 2.10 goals against on the season with a .924 save percentage. Proctor held UW-Eau Claire to one goal in the WIAC Tournament Championship last weekend while recording 41 saves.
 
The Bulldogs and the Pointers will drop the puck on Saturday, March 9 at 7:00 PM EST at the Arrington Ice Arena. Gates to Saturday's contest will open one hour before puck drop. Tickets to Saturday's game can be purchased by clicking HERE.
