ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Adrian College Women's Rugby team placed second at the Michigan Wolverine 7's tournament over the weekend, falling to Davenport in the Championship game.
The Bulldogs defeated Purdue twice and the Ypsilanti Women's Club on way to the Championship game versus the Panthers of Davenport.
Game 1 vs. Purdue
The Bulldogs started off strong, going up 17-0 in the first half through
Liz Dowding and
Madison Williamson, who crossed the line twice and added a conversion. Purdue scored early in the second half before another Dowding try ended the match in an Adrian victory, 22-7.
Game 2 vs. Davenport
In the second pool play match the Bulldogs fell to Davenport. Strong runs by
Madisyn McDonald brought the offense with good field position, but in the end the Bulldogs weren't able to convert them into points, losing 30-0.
Quarterfinal vs. Purdue
In the rematch of game one, Adrian was down to nine players due to some injuries throughout the tournament. Tries by
Chris Peters and
Jersey Wilson set up Adrian with a 14-0 lead, with conversions coming from
Dajah Quinney. Purdue fought back hard in the next few minutes, ending the first half at 14-12.
The Bulldogs rallied together in half two, and Wilson burned down the sideline again for an 80 meter try of her own. The match finished with a
Samantha Krawczyk try off of some excellent support play, continuing the Bulldogs day with a 24-12 win over Purdue.
Semifinal vs. Ypsilanti Women's Club
The semifinal was hotly contested in half one, with a Bulldog try by
Alyssa Luzkow answered back quickly by Ypsilanti for a 5-5 tie.
Kiara Kendall scorched the sideline to put Adrian ahead 10-5 at halftime. The floodgates opened up after that, with tries by Kendall, Peters, Quinney and Krawczyk sending the Bulldogs ahead 30-5 and into the championship match.
Final vs. Davenport
Once again, Davenport's class was too much to overcome. Winning their restarts and moving the ball wide led to several early tries, but the Bulldogs kept their heads high and fought with everything they had left. The final score would finish 39-0 for Davenport.
The Adrian College Women's Rugby team will now look forward to the Davenport 7's tournament next weekend (April 13).
