Softball Battles Trine University, But Loses Both Games of the Conference Doubleheader

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Adrian College softball team hosted #1 Trine University for an MIAA conference doubleheader on Tuesday evening. The Bulldogs were taken down by the Thunder in game one, 5-1. In the second game Adrian battled back to tie the game in the top of the seventh, but lost on a wild pitch allowing the runner on third base to advance and score, losing 3-2.

In game one the Thunder jumped on the Bulldogs early scoring one run in the first inning and eventually tallying three more across the plate in the second inning,  leading 4-0. In the top of the fourth Trine added another run, but Karson Bagelmann scored on a single from Maggie Leveille in the bottom of the fourth making it 5-1 in favor of Trine. Trine and Adrian both were held scoreless the rest of the way en route to a 5-1 Thunder victory.

Leveille led Adrian with two hits and an RBI while Bagelmann and Meghan Lupu were the only two other Bulldogs to record a base hit. Lupu and Bagelmann both totaled one stolen base each. Macee Schang took the loss going the distance while allowing 11 hits and striking out eight batters.

In game two the pitching dual was on between Adrian's Abbi Patton and Trine's Alexis Michon. Neither team scored a run in the first three innings of action. The Thunder struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring two runs, leading 2-0. A scoreless fifth inning led to Adrian scoring their first run of the game in the top of the sixth. Bagelmann reached first with a base hit, but advanced all the way to third base off an error from Trine. Taylor Gerhardt grounded out to the second baseman, but scored Baglemann cutting into the lead making it 2-1. Adrian in the top of the seventh needed one run to stay alive and they did just that. Pinch hitter, Peyton Russell, took a few pitches and eventually crushed a solo home run to left center field to tie the game up, 2-2. In the bottom of the seventh Trine has runners on third and second with two outs. Adrian decided to intentionally walk Trine's Debbie Hill to load the bases, but they had to pitch around her in order for her to receive the walk. On its way to be the fourth ball a wild pitch occurs and the runner from third would slide into home and the Thunder defeated the Bulldogs 3-2.

Bagelmann, Russell, Lupu, and Hailey DeChalk all recorded on hit in game two for Adrian. Abbi Patton ended the game throwing 115 pitches in the loss. Patton allowed six hits while striking out two.

Adrian will look to move on to their next MIAA contest on Saturday, April 13 at 1 & 3 PM for Senior Day against the Scots of Alma College.
