ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Adrian College women's rugby team opened its new era as part of Division 1 National Collegiate Rugby on Sunday, clobbering Indiana University at home by a 54-19 score.
The Bulldogs transitioned from Division 3 rugby earlier this year, and now compete at the highest level within the NCR. Adrian also competes in the BIG-10 Rugby Conference, alongside the likes of Notre Dame, Indiana, Michigan, Purdue and Michigan State.
Adrian had a strong start on Sunday, trusting the new system under new head coach,
Gracie Martinez, who they have only had for about a week and half. The Bulldogs dotted down their first try four minutes and twenty seconds into the game and didn't let up the entire game, dotting down their last try with twenty-six seconds left in the game.
Paige Longcore had an impressive game, scoring four tries for the Bulldogs, while
Armonie Brown was close behind with two tries of her own. Notable players for Adrian also included
Pendo Miregi and
Madisyn McDonald, who also added a try each for the home team. McDonald and
Madison Williamson made sure the team had structure and played with purpose, as well as adding some points to the scoreboard via conversion kicks.
Coach Martinez was proud of her team's opening performance, stating
"Every single player went above and beyond today. We do have some minor things to improve on, but overall this feels like a strong 180 from last season."
The Adrian College women's rugby team will battle Notre Dame next Saturday, September 28 on the road. Kick-off at 7:30 PM.
