ADRIAN, Mich. – The Adrian College club baseball team kicked off the spring season last weekend with a three-game series against No. 3 University of Michigan at home. After losing the first two games 9-3 and 13-7 in extra innings, the Bulldogs bounced back to win the third game 5-4.
In the opener, Adrian registered seven hits, led by a two-hit performance from Damon Harriss. Jack Florig started on the mound, throwing three innings, while Mathyis Neuenkirchen came in for relief, tossing four innings and striking out four batters.
Game two saw Adrian tally eight hits, including a four-run rally in the seventh inning. Trailing 5-1 entering the frame, Brock Hudik, Florig, and Jesse Leyva each drove in a run to tie the game at 5-5. Michigan answered with two runs in the ninth, but Adrian responded with two runs of its own to force extra innings. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs ultimately fell in 10 innings.
In game three, Adrian grabbed a much-needed win against the nationally ranked Wolverines. Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Leyva singled in two runs, and Connor Davies followed with an RBI triple to give Adrian a 3-2 lead. Michigan tied the game in the sixth, but the Bulldogs responded with RBIs from Carson Meister and Javier Rosas Franco, taking a 5-3 lead. Adrian held on for the win. Michael Hale pitched a stellar game for the Bulldogs, going eight innings and allowing just one earned run on seven hits. Colton Hicks closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save.
The club baseball team will be back in action this weekend, traveling to Western Michigan University for a three-game series, starting Saturday, March 22 at 12:00 PM.
