TIFFIN, Ohio - The Adrian College softball team traveled to Heidelberg University for a midweek double header. The Bulldogs rallied to a 12-1 win in the first and fell in the second game 11-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 1:Â
The Bulldogs came out swinging, putting up four runs in the opening frame. Karsyn Malinich and Taylor Gerhardt crossed the plate thanks to a fielder's choice hit by Maggie Leveille. Abbie Hoff followed up with a ground out, scoring Leveille from third to give Adrian a 3-0 advantage. Ashley Myers then capped the rally with a double to left-center, driving in the fourth run of the game.
Adrian continued their offensive onslaught in the second inning, adding five more runs to their tally. Leveille delivered a two-run double, followed by Peyton Russell's own double. Two walks from Genna Marasco and Meghan Lupu helped push the lead to 9-0, with the Bulldogs showing no signs of slowing down.
In the third, the Bulldogs tacked on two more runs, starting with Makenzi Johnson's scoring off an error by the catcher and a single from Gerhardt to score Lupu. Russell capped off the scoring in the game, hitting a sacrifice fly to bring Leveille home for her third run of the contest, putting the Bulldogs up 12-0.
Leveille had a standout performance, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Russell also impressed, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Gerhardt chipped in with a 2-for-4 showing, adding an RBI and a run scored.
Abbi Patton secured her fourth win on the season as she gave four innings of work with five hits, one strike out and one earned run.Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ GAME 2:
The Bulldogs faced a tough challenge in the second game of the doubleheader, falling 11-3 to Heidelberg. The game started with Heidelberg taking a commanding 5-0 lead into the third inning. However, Adrian fought back with some timely hitting.
Taylor Gerhardt ignited the offense with a double down the line, driving in
Genna Marasco to get the Bulldogs on the board. In the next inning, Marasco played a key role once again, this time hitting a sacrifice fly to bring home
Makenzi Johnson and cut the deficit further.
Adrian mounted one final push in the fifth inning when Hailey DeChallk doubled to center, scoring Gerhardt for the Bulldogs' third run. Despite the rally, Adrian couldn't fully close the gap, and Heidelberg ultimately secured the win, splitting the doubleheader with the Bulldogs.
Avery Clark was credited with the loss, pitching one inning, while Macee Shang provided solid relief, going three innings, allowing five hits, striking out two, and walking two.Â
Adrian is back on the diamond on Tuesday, April 1 where they will host Franklin College for the home opener of the year. First pitch is set for 3:00 PM.
