GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Adrian College softball team traveled to Calvin University on Saturday afternoon where the Bulldogs split the series 1-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 1
Calvin jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, and the two teams found themselves locked in a stalemate until Calvin erupted for 10 runs in the third inning, putting the game out of reach.
Adrian's lone run of the game came in the fourth when Meghan Lupu doubled to drive in a much-needed RBI. Lupu finished the day 2-for-2 with that RBI, showing strong offensive presence. Maggie Leveille also had a solid outing, going 2-for-3 with a pair of hits.
Macee Shang was credited with the loss after 2.2 innings of work, but her efforts in the circle were overshadowed by Calvin's explosive third inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 2
The Bulldogs came out with renewed energy, taking an early lead in the game. In the first inning, Leveille singled and drove in Lupu to give Adrian the edge. Then, in the third, Leveille delivered again, this time doubling to left to bring home Taylor Gerhardt and Genna Marasco, pushing the lead to 3-0. Abbie Hoff followed with a clutch single, scoring Leveille and putting the Bulldogs ahead 4-0 after three innings.
Calvin mounted a late push in the fourth and sixth innings, but Adrian's defense held strong, securing a narrow 4-3 victory.
Abbi Patton was credited with the win after a solid six innings in the circle, allowing five hits, three earned runs, and striking out four batters.
Leveille finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Hoff also went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Marsco was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2, providing crucial contributions to the win.
Adrian is back on the diamond on Tuesday, April 8 where they will take a trip to Angola, Indiana to face Trine University. First pitch is set for 3:00 PM.
