LANSING, Mich. – The Adrian College NCSA D1 team traveled to Michigan State on Sunday for a triple-header with the Spartans. In their one matchup earlier this season, the Bulldogs were victorious 11-1.
Game 1
The Bulldogs got the game started with a sac fly by Hayden Cutler to lead 1-0. That lead was quickly surrendered in the bottom of the first when the Spartans evened things up on an Adrian error. The second inning was a scoreless frame on both sides. In the bottom of the third, scoring resumed as the Spartans brought home two runs on an RBI double. The Bulldogs tied things up in the next half inning on an Elizabeth Grady two-run RBI single, making it 3-3. Another Adrian error allowed the Spartans to take back the lead, which they then added to later that inning. Down two in the fifth inning, Adrian rattled off a four-run inning, taking a 7-5 lead. Between the next two innings, Michigan State would score seven unanswered runs on six hits, aided by three Bulldog errors. The Spartans won game one by a final score of 12-7.
Game 2
The second game of the tripleheader started the same way as the first, with Adrian striking first with an RBI single from Hayden Cutler that plated two. The Spartans cut their deficit in half in the bottom half of the first inning, but Haylie Lambs extended Adrian's lead to two runs on an RBI single in the fourth inning. Michigan State responded right away in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs and tying the game at three apiece. Neither team was able to break the tie until the bottom of the seventh when the Spartans walked it off, securing the 4-3 victory.
Game 3
Adrian looked to avoid the sweep in game three against the Spartans. Kayleigh Webster drove home the game's first run before a bases-loaded walk brought home another. After the first inning, Adrian led 2-1. Michelle Huffman added to the Bulldogs' lead in the second inning on an RBI single. The long ball helped the Spartans cut into the Adrian lead in the third, making it 3-2. Three base hits and two walks helped Adrian extend their lead to 5-2 through three and a half innings. The Spartans offense would catch fire, similar to in game one, scoring six unanswered runs through the last three frames. Michigan State was victorious 8-5, completing the sweep.
