KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Adrian College men's lacrosse team battled back and forth with Kalamazoo on Wednesday night, but fell in a tightly contested overtime decision, 10-9, at MacKenzie Field. The Bulldogs drop to 2-8 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Adrian got off to a strong start, scoring five goals in the opening quarter to take a 5-3 lead. Tyler Ristau led the early charge with two first-quarter goals, while Alec Winegar, Braeden McNamara, and Austin Selvage each added scores.
Kalamazoo responded in the second quarter, using a 3-0 run to even the game and eventually take a 6-5 lead. The Bulldogs answered behind Ristau, who netted a man-down goal to tie the game, and McNamara, who scored on a man-up opportunity to give Adrian a 7-6 advantage heading into halftime.
The third quarter remained tightly contested, featuring multiple lead changes. After Kalamazoo regained the lead late in the period, Trace Tidswell scored to even the contest at 8-8, but the Hornets added a goal in the final minute to take a 9-8 lead into the fourth.
In the final quarter, Winegar found the back of the net off an assist from Tidswell to tie the game at 9-9 with just over 10 minutes remaining. Both defenses held strong down the stretch, forcing overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime period, Kalamazoo secured the win with the game-winning goal in double overtime.
Ristau led Adrian offensively with three goals and one assist, while Tidswell and Selvage each recorded three points with one goal and two assists apiece. Winegar added two goals and an assist, and McNamara finished with two goals.
Defensively, Adrian held a slight edge in ground balls (28-25) and went 26-of-30 on clears. Goalkeeper Josiah Karnehm made 15 saves in the loss. Both teams finished with 43 shots in an evenly matched contest.
Adrian will look to bounce back in its next conference matchup Saturday as they host Trine at 5:00 PM.
