KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Adrian College women's lacrosse team overcame an early deficit with a dominant offensive surge to defeat Kalamazoo, 22-13, on Wednesday afternoon at MacKenzie Field. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Adrian found itself in an early hole as Kalamazoo opened the game with a 7-3 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Hornets extended their lead to as much as 11-8 midway through the second quarter before the Bulldogs responded with a crucial late-half run. Adrian scored the final two goals of the half to cut the deficit to 11-10 heading into the break.
The momentum carried into the second half, where Adrian took control of the contest. Jenna Allie opened the third quarter with the game-tying goal before the Bulldogs added two more to take a 13-11 lead heading into the fourth.
In the final period, Adrian put the game out of reach with a nine-goal outburst, outscoring Kalamazoo 9-2 in the quarter to secure the 22-13 victory.
The Bulldogs were powered by a balanced offensive attack that saw three players record five goals each. Kacie Woodall led all players with 10 points on five goals and five assists, while Madeline Turcotte added five goals and four assists. Sarah Gross also netted five goals in the win. Additional scoring came from Jenna Allie with three goals, while Mariana Miller and Abby Malone each contributed two goals. Malone also dished out four assists.
Defensively, Sarah Gross controlled the midfield with a game-high eight ground balls, while Adrian held advantages in ground balls (28-19) and draw controls (19-17). In goal, Bella Norton earned the win with seven saves over nearly 50 minutes of action, while Chloe Martin added three saves in relief. Adrian finished the game with 39 shots, including 27 on goal, and converted efficiently during a decisive second-half stretch.
The Bulldogs will look to continue their strong start in conference play Saturday as they host Hope College at 1:00 PM.
