ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Adrian College NCBA Division I baseball team split a Sunday doubleheader with Purdue, taking the opener 3-0 before falling 14-1 in the nightcap.
Game 1: Adrian 3, Purdue 0
Adrian leaned on dominant pitching and timely hitting to secure the shutout victory in the opener. Michael Hale set the tone on the mound, tossing six scoreless innings while allowing seven hits and striking out five to earn the win. Cameron Wakefield closed the door with a scoreless seventh to pick up the save. The Bulldogs broke through in the third inning, capitalizing on a Purdue error. Brock Hudik reached and later scored on a Carson Meister RBI single to give Adrian a 1-0 lead. Adrian added insurance in the sixth inning with aggressive baserunning and situational execution. Tyler Hall came around to score on a steal of home, and Ryan Kempter followed with an RBI single to plate Carson Boike, extending the lead to 3-0. Despite being outhit 7-4, Adrian's pitching staff and defense held Purdue scoreless, turning two double plays to preserve the shutout.
Game 2: Purdue 14, Adrian 1
The nightcap saw a much different story, as Purdue's offense erupted early and often to salvage the split. Purdue plated six runs in the second inning, taking advantage of walks and defensive miscues to seize control. The visitors continued to apply pressure with a run in the third and a six-run fourth inning to extend their lead to 13-0. Adrian's lone run came in the fourth inning when Jesse Leyva delivered an RBI double, scoring Tyler Hall. On the mound, Purdue's starter went the distance, allowing just two hits while striking out eight. Adrian used multiple pitchers in the contest, with Connor Reneau taking the loss.
