GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Adrian College women's lacrosse team mounted a strong fourth-quarter comeback attempt, but ultimately fell to Calvin, 13-10, in the MIAA Tournament Semifinals on Tuesday afternoon. Adrian closes its season at 12-5, while Calvin advances to the conference championship.
The Bulldogs saw a balanced offensive effort with six different goal scorers, led by two goals each from Kacie Woodall, Sarah Gross, Mariana Miller, and Abby Malone.
Calvin opened the game with early momentum, scoring two goals in the first two minutes before Adrian responded. Gross got the Bulldogs on the board with a man-up goal, and scores from Jenna Allie and Miller pulled Adrian within one at 4-3 after the first quarter.
The Knights answered in the second quarter with a 5-1 advantage, extending their lead to 9-4 at halftime. Despite a goal from Woodall midway through the period, Adrian struggled to slow Calvin's offensive surge.
Calvin continued to build its lead in the third quarter, going up 11-5 before Adrian found a spark late. Gross tallied her second of the game while playing a man down, keeping the Bulldogs within striking distance heading into the fourth.
Facing a 13-7 deficit early in the final quarter, Adrian made one last push. Goals from Madeline Turcotte, Miller, and Malone fueled a 3-0 run in the closing minutes, trimming the deficit to 13-10 with just over a minute remaining. However, the Bulldogs were unable to complete the comeback.
Adrian held an edge in draw controls (14-11), led by Woodall and Turcotte, while also converting both free-position opportunities. Defensively, the Bulldogs combined for 11 saves in goal, with Bella Norton playing the majority of minutes.
Malone and Miller each added three-point performances with a goal and assist combination, while Jenna Allie and Mya Reyes each contributed assists in the effort.
Despite the loss, Adrian finished the season with one of its strongest campaigns in recent years, highlighted by a trip to the MIAA Tournament Semifinals.
