ADRIAN, Mich. - The John Dawson Tournament got off to a wonderful start for the host Bulldogs on Friday night with an 82-68 victory over MacMurray College in the season opener for both teams. The Bulldogs (1-0) used a balanced scoring attack and a big late first half surge to propel them to the 14-point win.
Adrian led as many as 25 points with 13:40 left in the second half but MacMurray would not quit as they closed the deficit to 12 points on five occasions in the final 5:41 of the game. Adrian and MacMurray played a solid 10 minutes to begin the game and the Bulldogs held a 21-16 lead after a three-pointer by Ryan Gallus. The Bulldogs used a 22-9 run over the final 5:29 of the first half building a 52-33 halftime advantage. There were four lead changes and two ties in the first 20 minutes.
Adrian played a little sloppy and careless in the second half but did manage to settle down and pull out a win. Adrian had 11 of their 16 turnovers in the second half which fueled a potential comeback for MacMurray. The duo of Desmond Young and Ian Weber combined to shoot 18-of-26 from the floor. Young finished the game with a game-high 20 points to go with four rebounds, three assists and a steal in 36 minutes. Weber posted a double-double with 18 points and 13 boards. He also recorded three blocks and three steals in 28 minutes. Dwight VanHoesen and Ryan Gallus were also in double figures in scoring with 13 and 12 points respectively. VanHoesen was 4-of-6 from the field and 4-of-4 at the line and had five assists and four steals. Gallus connected on two triples and led the team with seven assists in 33 minutes.
The Bulldogs shot 50.7 percent for the game and held the Highlanders to 39.7 percent from the floor. MacMurray coughed it up 23 times which the Bulldogs turned into 23 points. AC also had a 46-24 advantage scoring in the paint.
