AC Wins Consolation Game, 73-72, over Mount Union

Nov. 25, 2007

Stats

CLEVELAND, Ohio - It was a sweet victory on Sunday for the men's basketball team over a pesky Mount Union squad, 73-72, in the consolation game of the Bill Sudeck Holiday Tournament hosted by Case Western Reserve. One day after a 10-point defeat to the host school it was Adrian who built an eight-point lead at halftime and held on for a one-point win improving to 3-1 on the season.

Adrian overcame a sloppy game handling the ball by shooting it well from the floor and behind the arc. The Bulldogs turned it over 20 times as MU held a 27-10 advantage in points off turnovers. Adrian did shoot 53.8 percent overall (28-of-52) including a season-high 65.4 percent in the first half. AC also was 6-of-12 from the arc including 5-of-7 in the first half. The difference in the game scoring came at the free throw line where Adrian was 11-of-14 and Mount Union was 10-of-19. Both teams converted 28 field goals and six triples.

Senior forward Ian Weber tallied a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 11 boards. Weber was 6-of-10 from the field and also blocked one shot in 28 minutes. Frontcourt mate Matt Wayne had a solid game with 12 points and five rebounds in 27 minutes. Ryan Gallus scored 10 points and grabbed five boards and was named to the all-tournament team. Freshman guard Dwight VanHoesen was perfect in the shooting area going 3-of-3 from the floor with two three's and 2-of-2 at the free throw line for a total of 10 points. Junior guard Desmond Young rebounded from a poor shooting game yesterday with 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the floor. Young also had four rebounds, two assists and two blocks in 36 minutes.

Adrian held a 55-45 lead at the 15:41 mark of the second half before Mount Union made a comeback bid. MU cut the lead to 58-55 on a Sam King jumper at 13:29. The Purple Raiders cut the lead down to two on three occasions in the second half and eventually took their only lead of the second half with one second to go on a tip-in by Jay Mathis. Steven Shepherd committed a foul with no time running off the clock and VanHoesen went to the foul line and sank both free throws to give Adrian the victory.
