The men's basketball team ran into a tough host team on Friday night at the Papa John's/Country Hearth Inn Tournament as Centre College (7-1) claimed a 79-62 win over the visiting Bulldogs in the first game of the tourney. Adrian made as many field goals (26) as Centre but the home team made six more triples and 11 more free throws in the 17-point win.
Adrian College led just twice in the entire game at 2-0 and 4-2 at the 16:13 mark. Centre used a 13-2 run early in the first half and the Bulldogs answered by tying the game at 19-19 at the 5:46 mark. Centre went on a 9-0 run in less than two minutes to crush any hopes of a comeback before leading 40-29 at halftime.
Adrian got no closer than 11 points in the second half as Centre used timely shooting and aggressiveness to get to the basket and draw fouls. Four of the five starters were in double figures for Centre totaling 59 of the team's 79 points. The Bulldogs were led by guard Ryan Gallus who had a team-high 15 points to go with six rebounds, four steals and three assists. Sophomore guard Lamar Cardenas, who missed the team's first six games due to injury, totaled 13 points off the bench in 25 minutes. Cardenas was 4-of-10 shooting and 3-of-6 from the arc. Desmond Young was held in check for Adrian scoring eight points, his second lowest output of the season.
Adrian shot 45.6 percent for the game while Centre was at 47.3 percent. Centre was 11-of-24 from the arc while Adrian was 5-of-15. The Bulldogs will play tomorrow in the consolation game set to tip at 2 p.m.
