ADRIAN, Mich. -
Sophomore guard Lamar Cardenas gave the Bulldogs a much needed spark on Saturday when his fellow backcourt mates were struggling to find their scoring touch. The West Bloomfield product scored a season-high 18 points and was 7-of-11 from the field in Adrian College's 78-64 win over Alma College. He also grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assists in 22 minutes of action.
Senior forward Ian Weber and junior forward Brett Asher also played solid games for Adrian as Weber recorded his sixth double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. He tied a season-high in rebounds and was two points shy of tying his season-high in points. Weber was 7-of-11 shooting and scored eight points in each half. Asher was one point shy of tying his season-high with nine points and grabbed four rebounds making his second start of the season.
Adrian led by as many as 18 points with 1:54 left in the game but never really had the game in hand until that point. Alma scored 19 points in the first half as the Scots shot 29.6 percent including 2-of-11 from the arc. The 19 points were the fewest given up in the first half by the Bulldogs this year. Alma responded by shooting 50 percent (17-of-34) in the second half but their defense let them down as Adrian one-uped them by shooting a blistering 65.4 percent (17-of-26) in the final 20 minutes. The Bulldogs finished the game shooting 50 percent (30-of-60) and were 5-of-14 from the arc and 13-of-21 at the foul line. Junior guard Desmond Young contributed 13 points and a team-high five assists in 35 minutes. Young was 4-of-6 shooting in the second half after a 1-of-7 start in the first half.
The Bulldogs move their record to 7-9 overall and snap a four-game MIAA losing streak sitting at 2-4 in the conference. The Bulldogs host Kalamazoo College on Wednesday, January 30 beginning at 7:30 p.m.
