ADRIAN, Mich. -
The #23 Adrian Bulldogs dropped their second contest in a row to the #17 Western Michigan University Stallions in ACHA play on Saturday night in a tight 2-1 decision.
The physical first period provided a glimpse as to how the game would go on Saturday. The Bulldogs, despite being called for some critical penalties, were strong on the penalty kill throughout the course of the game. The Bulldog defense, keyed by the play of Ryan Krichiver in goal, thwarted all of the Stallions' power play opportunities in the first period while making critical stops in front of the net.
After the scoreless first period, the Bulldogs got on the board first when Trevor Markovich redirected the puck into the back of the net just five seconds into a five-on-three opportunity for the home team. Anthony Aukskalnis and Dominic Scala picked up assists on the goal that gave the Bulldogs the 1-0 advantage.
The Stallions, however, got the equalizer with 6:04 left in the second on a second chance shot in the crease.
The game would remain tight until the end of regulation. After going on the power play with less than two minutes to go in regulation, the Stallions netted the game-winner with :25 left on a one-timer just outside of the crease.
Krichiver had 27 saves while keeping the Bulldogs in contention for the win until the end of the game.
The Bulldogs are next in action on Thursday, January 10 when they host the ACHA squad from Michigan State University at Arrington Ice Arena. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7:30 p.m.
