The Bulldog football team defeated Hope, 39-3, on Saturday afternoon and did so with a punishing ground game and stout defense. Adrian kept pace with Trine for the top spot in the MIAA improving to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
Sophomore running back Myke Johnson had a big game on the ground with three rushing touchdowns. He also carried for 24 yards on 11 carries but made the most of his attempts. Johnson scored the first points for Adrian on a 12-yard run in the first quarter. He also scampered one-yard with 11 seconds to go in the second quarter and capped off the hat trick with a four-yard run in the third quarter.
Freshman running back Jared Edwards also had a career day going over 100 rushing yards for the first time in his career. Edwards had TD runs of 47 yards in the first quarter and 50 yards in the third quarter finishing with six carries for 127 yards. Senior quarterback Troy Niblock carried 14 times for 129 yards and one score. It is the third game this season that two Bulldogs have rushed for over 100 yards in a game. Adrian finished the day with a season-high 363 rushing yards on 54 carries and six rushing touchdowns.
Hope was limited to a total of 138 yards by the Adrian defense. The Flying Dutchmen ran the ball 35 times for 74 yards and completed 6-of-19 passes for 64 yards. The 36-point win is the biggest by the Bulldogs over Hope since a 39-13 win in 1988. The defense was led by Justin Judd who had three sacks for a loss of 18 yards. Danny Taylor led the team with eight tackles and Nick Pipia recorded seven tackles at linebacker. The Bulldogs scored touchdowns on six of their first eight possessions of the game.
