ADRIAN, Mich. -
The Adrian College men's basketball team looked up on the scoreboard down 45-40 with 13:13 left but seemed to run out of gas as Hope closed the game with a 25-8 run in a 70-48 decision. The Flying Dutchmen ranked fourth in the latest NABC Division III Poll found a way to limit the touches of Adrian's Desmond Young who had an eight-game streak of scoring in double figures stopped with nine points on 3-of-10 shooting. As a whole, Hope did a good job of stopping the Bulldog guards as Corey Smith was 2-of-7 shooting and Dwight VanHoesen was 0-of-4 from the field.
Senior guard Ryan Gallus had a good shooting night going 5-of-8 including 3-of-4 from behind the arc finishing with a team-high 14 points off the bench. Adrian shot just seven free throws in the contest and made four while Hope was 7-of-13 at the stripe.
Hope had balanced scoring with four players in double figures led by 17 points from Ryan Klein. Adrian held a 35-29 rebounding edge against the bigger frontline of the Flying Dutchmen. Hope came out of the gates playing firm defense not allowing a point until a Kevin Cassidy triple at the 14:23 mark which made the score 12-3. Hope and Adrian played even until the final 4:17 as Hope closed out the half on a 9-3 run to lead 37-21 at the break.
Gallus seemed to spark the Adrian offense in the early stages of the second half. With Hope leading 45-34 at the 14:39 mark, he scored six straight points to cut the lead to 45-40 on a three-point play. The Bulldogs would not get any closer however as the Flying Dutchmen scored the next six points to push their lead back to 11 at 51-40 with 10:20 remaining.
