The men's basketball team will have to wait until their regular season finale at Kalamazoo to try and snap a losing streak that has now reached five games after a 58-56 road loss on Wednesday at Alma College. The Scots pulled off the upset for just their third win of the season improving to 3-19 overall and 3-10 in the MIAA. Adrian slips to 9-14 overall and 4-9 in the MIAA.
Junior guard Desmond Young scored half of his team's points finishing with a game-high 28 points. It was the 10th time scoring 20 or more points in a game this season. Young was 11-of-16 for one of his best shooting contests of the season and was 4-of-6 from the line. Adrian shot 38.6 percent for the game but were just 4-of-17 from the arc. Alma shot 41.5 percent from the floor and were likewise subpar from the arc going 4-of-16.
Adrian appeared to be in line for the victory leading 52-43 with 4:28 left in the game but the Scots closed the game on a 15-4 run. Alma scored 10 straight points from 4:28 to 2:04 to take a 53-52 lead. Brett Asher hit a big pair of free throws with 1:28 remaining to give Adrian a 54-53 lead. Matt Brown converted a three-point play for the Scots with 57 seconds to put Alma ahead 56-54. Young took Adrian's next possession and tied the game at 56-56 on a jumper with 37 seconds to go. Ryan DeHaan picked a good time for his seventh and eighth points of the game hitting a layup with four seconds left to give Alma a two-point win. Michael Sutton had a long chance to win the game but could not convert at the buzzer.
Alma worked the ball inside to a 32-16 advantage scoring in the paint. Alma's bench also outscored Adrian's reserves, 19-4, for the game. Dwight VanHoesen and Ryan Gallus each had eight points for the Bulldogs.
