ADRIAN, Mich. -
The men's ACHA ice hockey team began a new era under head coach Dan Phelps on Tuesday night and dropped a 4-0 decision to the Wolverines at the Arrington Ice Arena. The season opener was loaded with penalties as the University of Michigan simply took advantage of their power play opportunities. U of M was 3-of-16 on the power play while Adrian went 0-for-7. The Wolverines had a 32-25 advantage in shots on goal but after one period the Bulldogs had a 16-9 edge. The second period did not see many quality scoring chances for Adrian who had just four shots on goal.
Doug Orzel had a solid night with two goals and one assist for the Maize and Blue. He got his team on the board at 3:55 on an even strength goal assisted by Mark Silverman and Joe Domino. The next shot on goal for Michigan also found the back of the net at 4:32 on the power play as Nick Tinetti scored an unassisted tally to give U of M a 2-0 lead after one.
Michigan scored on a 5-on-3 in the second period at 9:24 as Orzel got his second goal of the game with assists from Mike Cappo and Domino. Michigan added another power play goal at 0:58 in the third period as Kyle Montgomery was assisted by Orzel.
The game featured a total of 30 minor penalties with Adrian serving 18 of those. It proved to be too much time in the box as Adrian could not get back into the game. Adrian (0-1) will play on Friday night at Eastern Michigan in their next action.
