The men's basketball team sent seniors Desmond Young and Brett Asher away happy in their final regular season home game with an 80-69 win over rival Trine University. Young finished the game with 20 points on 10-of-15 shooting and was 10-of-12 inside the arc. He also dished out four assists and collected three rebounds and two steals in 33 minutes. Asher played 23 minutes and grabbed three rebounds to go with one steal.
Adrian (8-14, 5-7) for the second game in a row came out firing against the Thunder (6-17, 2-10) after a hot start on Wednesday against Alma. Adrian connected on 10 of their first 14 shots (71.4%) and were 5-of-6 from the arc in building a 27-9 lead at the 11:21 mark of the first half. Michael Staley scored 10 of his team-high 22 points during the stretch and was 3-of-3 from the floor including 2-of-2 from the arc.
The Bulldogs increased their lead to 30 points at 50-20 with 3:02 left in the first half after a Young jumper. Trine did not roll over as they went on a 11-0 run to close out the half and trail 50-31. Adrian had 12 fast-break points in the first half and shot 65.5 percent from the floor (19-of-29) and 71.4 percent from the arc (10-of-14). Trine kept possessions alive with 10 offensive rebounds and had eight second-chance points in the first half.
The scoring pace slowed in the second half for the Bulldogs as they scored 30 points and were outscored by eight in the final 20 minutes. Adrian led 57-39 at the 15:49 mark when Trine went on a quick 9-2 run to cut the deficit to 59-48 with 12:41 remaining. Trine could not cut the lead under double digits in the second half and Adrian used a 9-0 run over a three-minute span to turn a 12-point lead into a 72-51 lead with 6:31 to go.
Trine did cut the lead to 11 at the end of the game but never really made a game of it. Wes Weir led Trine with 19 points and made five triples. Glenn Alfieri scored 18 points and grabbed six boards. Trine shot 40 percent in the second half and Adrian maintained a good percentage at 50 (13-of-26) in the second half.
Dwight VanHoesen scored 17 points which was nearly nine over his season average. VanHoesen went 6-of-12 from the floor and 5-of-9 from deep. He also had five rebounds and four assists in 32 minutes. Staley went 7-of-10 from the floor in scoring his 22 points. He also dished out eight assists and now has 130 assists this season. He needs 10 more to tie the single-season record at Adrian.
