ADRIAN, Mich. -
While it is not yet determined whom Adrian will play next weekend in the MCHA Harris Cup Four, the Bulldogs will get a chance to pull off a double sweep of the regular season and tournament titles next weekend after an 8-2 win over Northland on Saturday afternoon.
Northland was playing without star goaltender Daniel McIntosh as B.J. Leach got the start between the pipes for the Lumberjacks. Leach was peppered with shots all afternoon making 57 saves as Adrian totaled 65 shots on goal. Brad Fogal returned to net after missing yesterday's game and played the first 23:52 of the contest. Fogal was yanked after giving up two goals in a span of 1:07 in the second period. Fogal's team was up 3-2 at the time and he still got credit for the win (23-1-1). Marc Stuart played 23:17 in net and made seven saves giving up no goals. Jeremy Cross played the final 12:49 for Adrian and made four saves.
Adrian jumped ahead 3-0 after the first period and it looked like more of the same against a Northland squad that came into the game with just one win this season (1-25-1). Mike Leone scored a power play goal at 12:49 with assists from Kyle Frieday and Mike Dahlinger for his seventh of the year. Brad Houston scored at even strength at 14:07 with assists from Eric Roman and Joel Workman for his 14th of the year. Leone's second of the period and eighth as a Bulldog at 19:15 came at even strength with assists from Shawn Skelly and Bobby Hineman.
Northland scored the first two goals of the second which forced the goaltender switch by Adrian. Shaun Newman scored on the doorstep for a power play goal at 2:45 with assists from Matt Tanneberg and Chad Moore for his third of the season. Joe Belanger beat Fogal five-hole just 1:07 later at even strength for his third of the season with assists from Ryan Pageau and Josh Spiegel.
Adrian picked up their intensity from that point and scored the final five goals of the game with four in the second and one more in the third. Dahlinger's 13th of the year at even strength from Houston and Sam Kuzyk at 5:41 made it 4-2. Chris Stansik's eighth of the season at 10:35 on the power play from Eric Miller and Quinn Waller made it 5-2. Frieday's eighth of the year at 16:06 on the man advantage from Workman and Leone made it 6-2. Kyle Watson's seventh of the year at 18:40 from Mike Towns and Waller made it 7-2 and shifted all the momentum back to the Bulldogs.
Houston's second of the game and 15th of the season from Frieday at 3:17 of the third at even strength gave Adrian the 8-2 margin of victory. AC went 3-of-7 on the power play and have scored a power play goal in 16 straight games. Northland was 1-of-6 on the power play. Adrian is now 25-1-1 on the season.
