Day One Evenly Played for Volleyball

ALLIANCE, Ohio - The season got going on Friday for the Adrian College volleyball team as they split a pair of matches at the Mount Union Invitational. The Bulldogs claimed a 3-1 win over Denison before falling 3-0 to Westminster.

The ladies turned away Denison by scores of 25-22, 25-23, 21-25 and 25-14 in the first match on Friday. Senior Mary Rinke led Adrian with 12 kills and committed just one attack error. She had a .440 attack percentage in three sets. Junior Rebecca Tincknell added nine kills and senior Courtney Sellers also tallied nine kills. The team had 10 total blocks and nine service aces. Senior Julie Smiertka had three of those aces.

The Bulldogs did not fare as well in the second match of the day falling 25-19, 25-20 and 25-21 to Westminster. Tincknell added eight more kills and posted a .375 attack percentage for the match. Senior Valerie Smith tacked on five kills in 12 attacks. Sophomore Laura Heinz contributed with four kills in five attacks with no errors. On the defensive side, junior Laura Scherer had 14 digs.

The invitational continues tomorrow as Adrian plays host Mount Union at 10:00 am. The pool play will be wrapped up after that and AC will have one more match at a time to be determined.
