The saying you can't win the game in the first half, but you can surely lose a game in the first half rang true on Saturday afternoon at Calvin as the Bulldogs shot 20.6 percent in a 68-61 defeat. Calvin meanwhile torched the nets at a 61.9 percent clip in building a 40-23 halftime lead.
Calvin led 15-10 at the 13:08 mark of the first half after a Delano Collins layup and then went on an 8-0 run over the next 1:24 to build a 23-10 lead.
In the second half, Adrian showed a fighting spirit and got itself back into the game. Calvin extended their lead to 21 points at the 14:10 mark and continued to lead by 20 points with 7:15 to play.
Adrian went on a 11-0 run over a period of 2:03 as Matt Wayne scored the first five points of the run. Wesley Reed followed with a triple and Jovon Mosley converted a three-point play to make it a single-digit deficit at 59-50 with 5:12 left.
Reed connected again with 3:36 to go from deep to cut the lead to six at 59-53. Reed was not done as he was fouled on a three-point attempt with 1:13 to go and made all three free throws to cut the lead to 62-58.
Trent Salo made a pair at the line with 54 seconds remaining and after an empty Adrian possession split at the line to give Calvin a 65-58 lead with 42 ticks left. Reed hit another triple with 15 seconds to go but the comeback bid would fall short.
Reed had a season-high 17 points to lead Adrian (7-8, 2-2 MIAA) and made four triples in 10 tries. Joseph Kopicki added 10 points off the bench going 6-of-6 at the line. Mosley also had 12 points but struggled from the field going 3-of-14 in 28 minutes. Adrian went 15-of-17 at the free throw line for the game and finished shooting 28.6 percent (20-of-70) from the floor.
