Junior guard Jovon Mosley did all he could on Saturday night in a hostile environment as he scored a career-high 27 points in a 65-61 loss to the Hornets. Kalamazoo improves to 3-10 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA while Adrian falls to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
Mosley went 9-of-17 from the floor and connected on 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. He was also 4-of-4 at the foul line and tallied four rebounds and three steals in 32 minutes. Mosley is leading the team in scoring (13.5 ppg) this season and is averaging 21.5 points in his last four games. He is shooting 62.3 percent from the floor (33-of-53) and 50 percent from deep (11-of-22).
Adrian got off to a great start in their first MIAA road game after a win on Wednesday at the Merillat Center against Trine. The Bulldogs scored the first five points of the game and led by as many as six on three different occasions in the first 10 minutes. The Hornets composed themselves and got back into the game with a huge run. Kalamazoo went from down three with 12:09 left in the half to a 13-point lead at 27-14 with 5:46 left in the first period. Tyler Stewart had eight points during the stretch.
The Bulldogs turned up their intensity and began to cut into the lead going towards the break. Adrian trimmed the lead to 30-28 with 25 seconds to go in the half after a Dennis Mason basket and trailed by a 31-28 margin at intermission. Adrian shot 35.7 percent in the first half and were 3-of-5 from three-point land and 5-of-8 at the charity stripe. Kalamazoo shot 48 percent in the opening half with a 3-of-7 clip from deep and a 4-of-7 effort from the line.
The Bulldogs cut the lead to one point on two different occasions in the first eight minutes of the second half but could not gain a lead. Adrian trailed 35-34 at the 16:45 mark and 43-42 at the 12:41 mark. Kalamazoo went on an 8-0 run to extend their advantage to 51-42 on a triple by Ryan Clark after an Adrian 30-second timeout.
Kalamazoo once again went up 13 at 58-45 with 7:39 left in the contest on a triple by Eric Fishman. The Bulldogs found a way to again climb back into the game and went on a 14-2 run over a 5:31 stretch to trail 60-59 with 2:08 remaining after a Blair Ramsey layup.
Clark hit a big basket with 1:32 left to give the Hornets a 62-59 lead. Mosley misfired on a game-tying three as Kalamazoo grabbed the rebound and called a timeout with 44 seconds to go. A.J. Williams missed a shot with 38 seconds to play and Joe Prepolec grabbed the offensive rebound. Williams got the ball back and was fouled by Mosley with 29 seconds on the clock. Williams missed both free throws but the Hornets got another critical offensive rebound as Fishman went to the line after a Delano Collins foul. Fishman connected on both to give Kalamazoo a 64-59 lead. Michael Staley was fouled with 21 ticks left and made both free throws to make it a one-possession game. Clark was fouled with 17 seconds left and split at the line to salt the game away. Mosley and Staley both missed triples in the final 10 seconds.
Adrian had held their opponents to 41.3 percent shooting this season but Kalamazoo found a way to shoot 53.3 percent for the game including 60 percent in the second half. The Hornets did have 19 turnovers and the Bulldogs scored 22 points off those miscues.
Adrian was outrebounded, 32-26, but did have 11 offensive rebounds and 24 points in the paint. Ramsey had a career-high 13 points in his sixth game as a Bulldog. He upped his scoring average to 5.3 points per game. Matt Wayne led the squad with eight rebounds.
