ADRIAN, Mich. - The football team lit up Performance Stadium
like it was the fourth of July on Saturday night as they scored
early and often in a 58-31 shootout over Kalamazoo (3-5, 2-2 MIAA).
Adrian erupted for 580 total yards and scored in every quarter en
route to a big night from several offensive players.
Mike McGee ended the night with five touchdowns passes tying the
school record held by Bruce Crosthwaite and Justin Hemm. He needs
two more career touchdown passes to tie the school career mark (43)
and also set a career mark tonight with 31 pass attempts. He has
699 career pass attempts and passed Dan Hutchison into first place.
McGee completed 21-of-31 for 310 yards and threw four touchdowns in
the first half as Adrian built a 27-24 lead at halftime.
Jared Edwards rushed for a career-high 250 yards on 27 carries
(9.3 ypr) for the Bulldogs. He was five yards shy of the school
record and also was one yard shy of the school record with a
90-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Edwards also had 76
return yards with one punt return and three kickoff returns.
The Adrian defense yielded 329 yards which was 90 yards under
Kalamazoo's season average and did a great job in the second half.
The Hornets had 213 total yards in the first half and just 116
yards in the second half. The defense tied a school record with six
interceptions of Nick Jones and also sacked the Hornet quarterback
five times. Chris Cook had two picks for 33 return yards including
one in the end zone on Kalamazoo's first possession. Cook also had
nine tackles on the night. Bryan Garbarino had a diving
interception and added seven tackles. Danny Taylor had a pick
returned for 21 yards and also had five tackles including two sacks
for a loss of 20 yards. Keman Jacobs got his first
interception of the season on Kalamazoo's second possession and
Jeff Makowski also had a 28-yard interception for a touchdown and
tied Cook with a team-high nine tackles. Makowski's pick six
came in the fourth quarter with 3:49 to play.
McGee completed 21 passes to four different receivers. Mitch
Gabriele had a career night with 12 receptions for 162 yards
and two touchdowns. Gabriele caught seven passes on Adrian's first
drive alone capping it off with a 27-yard strike at the 6:58 mark.
Gabriele's second score was a 12-yard catch with 1:30 left in the
second quarter.
Justin Hemm continued his productive stretch at wide receiver
with six catches for 119 yards and three touchdowns. Hemm had an
11-yard grab at the 14:16 mark of the second quarter and caught
another one at 4:29 on a 19-yarder. He finished the night with a
38-yard grab in the end zone at the 13:22 mark of the third
quarter.
Damon Brown scored the sixth touchdown of the night for the
Bulldogs from three yards, which was his first career rushing
touchdown. Logan Mitseff also added a 24-yard field goal at 8:14 of
the fourth quarter on his only attempt of the game. The 58 points
scored for Adrian was the second-highest in the series history. AC
scored 62 points in last year's win at Angell Field in
Kalamazoo.
