Bulldogs Fall in Nail-Biter to Belles

ADRIAN, Mich. – It was a back and forth match on Wednesday as the Adrian College volleyball team took on St. Mary's College. In the end, the Belles edged the Bulldogs 3-2(16-25, 25-23, 20-25, 27-25, 15-12). The Bulldogs are now 9-17 on the season and 3-11 in conference play.

Adrian came out firing and dominated the first set never giving the Belles a chance to even tie. St. Mary's battled back in the second set as Adrian was unable to continue their momentum from the first set. In the third, Adrian came back with the intensity they had in the first set as they took the lead at 2-1 and never looked back. As with the second set, the Belles were able to battle the Bulldogs with seven tie scores and five lead changes. The fifth and final set began with St. Mary's tacking the lead before Adrian battled back to take the lead. Leading 10-8, the Belles rattled off seven of the next nine points to take the set and the match.

For Adrian, junior Roxanne Duran (Toledo, Ohio/Springfield) had her first career double-double with 10 kills and tied a team season-high with 26 digs. Rebecca Tincknell (Troy, Mich./Troy), a senior, led the Bulldogs with 14 kills, while putting down three blocks. Freshman Ashley VanHouten (Cadillac, Mich./McBain) had a solid offensive and defensive game, throwing down six kills while having a match-high seven blocks, including two solo. Sophomore Stephanie Holloman (Southfield, Mich./Roeper) contributed with six kills. The freshman tandem of Elise Mindick (Northville, Mich./Northville) and Danielle Bogedin (Shelby Twp, Mich/Utica) each had three kills.  

Defensively, senior Jamie Taylor (AuGres, Mich./AuGres-Sims) was second on the team with 19 digs behind Duran.

Junior Joanna Slisinger (Sterling Heights, Mich./Cousino) led the Bulldogs as she tied a personal season-high with 20 assists. Sophomore Kristy DeClercq (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) was second on the team with 12 assists.

The team was hot from the service line, with their second most aces in a match with 11. Duran, Holloman, MacFarlan and Taylor each had two.

The Bulldogs will travel to Albion College for a 6:30 p.m. match on Friday, October 29.
