ALBION, Mich. - The Adrian College football team could not
overcome miscues on Saturday afternoon at Albion College as they
fell 38-21 to the Britons at Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium. The
Bulldogs outgained Albion, 459-383, in total yards but coughed up
the ball five times compared to no turnovers for the home team.
Senior Mike McGee set school records for completions (33) while
throwing for 367 yards and one touchdown in defeat. Unfortunately,
he tossed three interceptions including one returned for a score
and also lost a fumble at the Albion 5-yard line in the fourth
quarter. Sophomore Mitch Gabriele set a school record with 15
receptions for 161 yards. He was also just two catches shy of the
MIAA single-game record of 17. Both receptions and receiving yards
were a career-high for the Hillsdale native. Justin Hemm also
went over 100 receiving yards with seven grabs for 113 yards and a
score.
Adrian (3-5, 2-2 MIAA) put themselves in a hole right away as
Chris Greenwood took an interception back 62 yards on the Bulldogs'
opening possession for a 7-0 lead. Greenwood also returned a pick
for a score in last year's meeting at Adrian. After an Adrian
three-and-out, Albion marched 73 yards in 12 plays and Mychal Galla
connected on a 20-yard field goal to put the hosts up 10-0 at the
3:26 mark of the first. After another three-and-out by the
Bulldogs, the Britons' Clinton Orr rumbled 68 yards on the third
play of the drive to give Albion a 17-0 lead after one quarter.
The second quarter saw Adrian move to the Albion 35 on their
first possession of the quarter but McGee was halted for no gain on
fourth-and-one giving the ball back to the Britons. The next three
possessions resulted in punts and the Bulldogs took over with 2:06
left until halftime. McGee found Gabriele for 43 yards on the first
play of the drive to the Albion 48. McGee then found Hemm for 30
yards to the Albion 3 on third play of the drive. McGee kept for a
five-yard touchdown run with 38 seconds left in the half to cut the
lead to 17-7 at intermission. Orr had 19 carries for 153 yards in
the first half.
The momentum shifted to Albion quickly in the third quarter as
Orr took the first handoff and ran 63 yards to the end zone to give
Albion a 24-7 lead. McGee led Adrian down the field on their next
possession and culminated an eight-play, 70-yard drive with a
13-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 24-14 at the 11:45
mark.
Adrian took over at midfield with 6:49 left in the third, but
D'ante Thompson was stripped of the ball on the first play after
a 25-yard gain and it was recovered by Albion's Eric Woods at
the Britons' 23. Just five plays later, Spencer Krauss found Brian
Spencer for a 55-yard touchdown pass at the 3:50 mark to give
Albion a 31-14 lead.
McGee found Hemm for a 22-yard screen pass for a score on
the first play of the fourth quarter to once again cut the lead
down to 10 points at 31-21. Adrian took over with 10:08 remaining
at the Albion seven and McGee was sacked on the second play of the
drive and fumbled the ball away to Jeremy Green at the Adrian five.
J.C. Cruse caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Krauss on the
second play of the drive to give Albion a 38-21 lead that they
would keep until the finish.
Kyle Timmis had a career-high nine catches for 59 yards in the
contest. Danny Taylor led the Bulldogs with nine tackles including
one and a half tackles for loss.
