KALAMAZOO, Mich. -
The baseball team concluded its regular season on Mother's Day at Kalamazoo College as the Hornets won 6-5 in an extra-inning comeback in game 1 while the Bulldogs rebounded for a 7-3 win in game 2.
Adrian scored first in game 1 in the top of the first as Alex Cowart hit a one-out sacrifice fly scoring Andrew Anderson who led off the inning with a single to right. Kalamazoo got the run right back in the bottom of the first as Brian Barkley had a one-out RBI triple to center which scored David Kamerman who led off with a single to left center.
Adrian regained the lead in the third with help from the Kalamazoo defense. Andrew DeLuca singled with one out and then took second on a wild pitch. Cowart hit a ball to third baseman Max Weberman and he overthrew first as Cowart took second and DeLuca scored for a 2-1 lead. The Bulldogs took a 3-1 lead in the fifth as Joe Dubina hit a solo shot for his fourth homer of the season to lead off the inning.
Kalamazoo scored once in the fifth and sixth to tie the game at 3-3. Andrew Geese pitched into the fifth inning going 4.2 innings. He left with a runner on third and two outs. Nick Sarkissian entered the game and Barkley greeted him with a RBI single through the right side. KC's run in the sixth started after two outs in the inning. Weberman singled, Tim Lynch was hit by a pitch and Kamerman walked to load the bases. Mike McCann singled home Weberman and Lynch was cut down at the plate by Cowart to Dubina to preserve the tie.
The game went into extra innings as Adrian went ahead 5-3 with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth. Steve Vanderheyden had a one-out RBI single through the left side and after Kalamazoo made a pitching change with Tommy Carion, Brian Bilius singled home another run. The Hornets scored three times in the bottom of the ninth for the dramatic comeback. Sarkissian got the first out of the inning and Dan Welch came in from the bullpen. Welch blew the save and took the loss (1-1) as Kamerman tripled to start the rally. McCann cut the lead to 5-4 with a RBI single. Vanderheyden made an error to put runners on first and second. Barkley drew a walk to load the bases and Drew Ordakowski hit into a fielder's choice as the out was recorded at second. The tying run scored and runners were at first and third with two outs. Eric Glanz played the role of hero as he singled through the left side to win it for the Hornets. Carion got the win (2-3) as both teams had 10 hits in game 1.
Adrian fell behind 1-0 in game 2 after the first but then scored in each inning for the rest of the game in a 7-3 win. David Partyka (7-1) got the win as he shut down the Hornet offense for four innings after the single run in the first. He went five innings and allowed five hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Craig Steadman pitched a scoreless inning of relief in the sixth and Sean Hartman gave up a pair of earned runs in the seventh.
Michael Herzog hit in the ninth spot and played shortstop going 2-for-4. Jason Greer hit his third home run of the season and Cowart hit a two-run shot for his eighth homer of the year. Nate Sarkissian went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs. Vanderheyden also had a double in two at-bats. Kyle Strawn reached base three times with a triple and two walks. Brandon Luczak took the loss (0-4) allowing five earned runs in 5.1 innings of work. Adrian had 11 hits in the nightcap as they took three of four in the weekend series against Kalamazoo.
The team will now prepare for the NCAA Regionals with site and time to be announced next Sunday, May 16 late in the evening on NCAA.com
Notes: Cowart extended his hitting streak to 14 games, which is the longest on the team this season...Anderson has hit safely in nine straight heading into postseason play...Adrian hit .371 in the four-game set against Kalamazoo...As a team, Adrian drew 14 walks and struck out 11 times...Adrian posted a 2.99 ERA in MIAA games this season and hit .367...They led the league in hitting, pitching and fielding.
