Bulldogs Take a Bite out of Belles

Box Score

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Adrian College volleyball team bounced back on Saturday to defeat MIAA opponent St. Mary's College 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-19). The record now stands at 5-7 and 2-4 in the MIAA.

Adrian started slow, falling in the first set of the game. Once the Bulldogs were able to hit their stride, in the second set, they never lost the lead to easily take the Belles. The third set was a back and forth battle between the two teams as there were eight lead changes and 17 ties. The Bulldogs struggled with their serve receive, and tried to do too much to make up for it. Down 23-20, the Bulldogs rattled off five straight points to win the set. The final set didn't provide quite as much drama, as Adrian fell behind early, but came back to tie the set at 11-11 and never looked back after rattling off the next seven straight points.

The offense for Adrian had the second most kills for the season with 45 and 15 total blocks. The Bulldogs were led by senior Rebecca Tincknell who had a team-high 11 kills, while adding seven digs and two block assists. Sophomore Stephanie Holloman tied a season-high with nine kills to go along with a match-high two solo blocks and six block assists. Freshman Ashley VanHouten tied a season-high with five kills while adding in two solo blocks and five block assists. Kelly MacDonald, a sophomore, had six kills to go along with six block assists. Freshman Elise Mindick again started in place of the injured Danielle Bogedin, came down with five kills and five digs. According to Coach Elisa Joris, Mindick has stepped up for the Bulldogs and has been blocking well. Junior Roxanne Duran once again had an outstanding all-around game with seven kills, 11 digs and two block assists.

"Roxie does a great job on serve-receive," Coach Joris said. "She does a great job at not just being a certain type of attacker. She can hit the ball with power or she can use finesse to get it down.

On the defensive side of the ball, freshman Kristi Walker had a match-high 19 digs and senior Jamie Taylor had 12. Sophomore Kristy DeClercq had a team-high 22 assists to go along with nine digs and two kills. While Junior Joanna Slisinger added in 11 assists.

The Bulldogs will face-off against MIAA opponent Albion College as they visit Adrian on Wednesday, September 29 at 6:30 pm.
