WHITEWATER, Wis. – The Adrian College football team went
into their contest at #1 UW-Whitewater with a shock the world
mentality and after the first quarter it looked like maybe they
would. The Warhawks capitalized in the second quarter with 12
points heading into the locker room and the Adrian offense never
got going after the break in a 35-0 loss on Saturday afternoon from
Perkins Stadium.
The scoreless first quarter may have come as a surprise to
everyone not associated with the Adrian College football program.
The Bulldogs gained two first downs on their opening drive and
missed on a fourth-and-three from the UWW 36-yard line.
UW-Whitewater went three-and-out on their first drive to give the
ball back to AC. After Adrian also went three-and-out it was UWW
who fumbled on their second play to give Adrian a little
momentum.
Adrian could not capitalize on the turnover and punted back to
UWW with 3:29 left in the quarter. A holding call against UWW
forced them to punt and it was a big play as the ball rested inside
the five. The Bulldogs were called for holding on the punt and the
drive started at their own one-yard line. The bad field position
forced the Bulldogs to just run and the Warhawks forced a punt deep
into the end zone. UW-Whitewater got the ball back at the AC 44 and
five plays later it was Matt Blanchard finding Adam Brandes for a
17-yard touchdown with a miss on the extra point.
The Warhawks got the ball back after an interception at their
own 30 and marched 70 yards in eight plays with 2:58 left until
halftime to make it 12-0 after another PAT miss. Blanchard kept it
for a six-yard scoring run.
The best chance for Adrian to score came in the fourth quarter
after senior Mike McGee was inserted as quarterback trailing 28-0.
McGee completed seven passes on the drive and set up a field goal
try from 38 yards, but Logan Mitseff went wide right with 6:58 left
in the contest.
UW-Whitewater scored 13 points in the third quarter and added 10
more in the fourth. Brandes caught another touchdown pass midway
through the third. Aaron Rusch carried it in from five yards at
1:02 left in the third to make it 25-0. Eric Kindler booted a
24-yard field goal at 12:35 in the fourth and Booker Stanley scored
from three yards with 4:37 left to make the final score 35-0.
Adrian had 162 total yards while UWW gained 472 yards. Each team
had 62 offensive plays with the Warhawks passing for 289 yards.
Darren Walter led Adrian with nine tackles while Chris Cook added
eight stops.
