Volleyball Finishes Fourth at Bishop Invitational

In the opening game of the day, Adrian faced off against John Carroll. After falling behind 2-0, the Bulldogs fought back by winning the next two sets for force a decisive fifth set. The ladies gave the Blue Streaks their all during the set but lost a close one falling 3-2 (23-25, 16-25, 25-21, 25-19, 11-15).

The final match of pool play pitted the Bulldogs against the host school Ohio Wesleyan. The Bulldogs refused to give the Bishops a chance to get into the match winning in straight sets 3-0 (25-18 25-21, 25-14). The offense was led by junior Roxanne Duran with nine kills and tied freshman Kristi Walker with a team-high 10 digs. Sophomore Kristy DeClercq had a season-high 30 assist and added nine digs in the win.

The last game of day matched up Adrian with Goshen to determine third place. The Bulldogs fought hard but the Maple Leafs were able to hang on to win 3-1 (25-20, 18-25, 25-13, 25-16) giving Adrian fourth place in the Bishop Invitational.

For the tournament senior Rebecca Tincknell led the team in kills with 34. Freshman Danielle Bogedin, sophomore Stephanie Holloman and Duran each had 23 kills for the tournament. Leah Carswell, a freshman, led the team with 16 blocks. DeClerq provided the team with solid setting while Walker played a pivotal role during the weekend racking up 60 digs to help stabilize the defense with Jamie Taylor still injured.

"This weekend was a great learning experience for the team" Coach Elisa Joris said. "Our defense played great and we served aggressive all weekend. Our front row blocked well and was able to adjust to each opponent's offense. Overall, I'm pleased with how the weekend turned out."

The Bulldogs will open MIAA conference play on Tuesday, September 7 at 6:30 pm when they host 2009 tournament champion Calvin.
