Adrian Wins 66-63 in OT over Staten Island in Final Round of Lycoming Tip Off

Box Score

Williamsport, Pa. – In dramatic fashion, the Adrian College (2-1) men's basketball team won the second and final game of the Lycoming College Tip Off Tournament tonight (Nov. 19) with a 66-63 overtime victory over The College Staten Island.

"I'm very proud of our team," said head coach Mark White. "We are a very young team facing some challenging circumstances with injuries to juniors Wes Reed and Dennis Mason. We are finding a way to win, while we grow. I'm very happy with how we are developing."

In a game that featured eight ties and 19 lead changes, Adrian went on a 7-2 run at the 7:31 mark of the first half which was capped off by freshman Eric Lewis converting on a three-point play. The Bulldogs headed into halftime up 29-25.

The Dolphins (0-2) came out a rejuvenated team in the second half with an 8-4 run topped by a layup by Jordan Young, knotting the game up 33-33.

Down 54-53, Adrian junior Sean Gallant converted on a traditional three-point play to put the Bulldogs up two points with 1:21 left in regulation.

After a Dolphin pair of free throws and a jumper, Staten Island held a 57-56 lead with eight seconds on the game clock. With four second left, Staten Island made an ill-advised foul on junior Brad Whitby when Whitby was navigating the sideline. Whitby capitalized on the opportunity and made one of his two free-throws to send it in overtime at 57 apiece.

In overtime at the 1:35 mark, Lewis scored on a layup to tie the game at 63 apiece. After a miss three-pointer by Adrian, the ball would go out of bounds off the Dolphins setting up Adrian for another chance. Junior Delano Collins capitalized with another traditional three-pointer for the eventual game clincher.

Lewis, who earned a spot on the All-Tournament, led four in double figures for the Bulldogs with 16 points. Whitby and Collins earned 13 points each and junior Cody Barnes scored 11. On the boards Lewis and Whitby grabbed down five each to lead the team.

For the game, Staten Island held a slight 44.6% (25-for-56) to 44.4% (24-for-54)shooting advantage over Adrian.

The Bulldogs are back in action next Tuesday (Nov.22) for its home opener as they face Siena Heights at 8:00 p.m. for the Battle of the Milk Jug.
