Bulldogs Upset at Alma, 54-53

ALMA, Mich. - The rough patch for the men's basketball team continued on Wednesday night (Feb. 16) as they dropped a 54-53 decision at Alma. It was the fifth loss in the last six games for the Bulldogs and gave the Scots just their second league win of the season. Adrian defeated Alma, 81-42, in the other meeting earlier this season but could not duplicate that performance on the road.

Adrian looked to be on their way in the first half with a 10-point lead at the 12:25 mark, but Alma kept things close as the Bulldogs led 23-21 at the half. The teams were battling back and forth until late in the game. Adrian led 51-48 on a jumper by Delano Collins with 2:43 left and the Scots answered as Cory Schneider cut the lead to 51-50 with 2:09 remaining and was fouled. He made the free throw to tie the contest at 51-51.

Both teams missed a three-pointer on their next possession giving the ball back to Adrian with under a minute remaining. Collins put the Bulldogs up 53-51 with 41 ticks left on a layup. Alma's Greg Silverthorn then nailed a three-pointer with 15 seconds to play to give Alma a 54-53 lead. Adrian was fouled three times and there were three timeouts in the final 10 seconds before Adrian's Wesley Reed took a last-second jumper that did not fall.

Collins showed some unexpected offense with 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting. He also once again took care of the ball with no turnovers and added five assists in 37 minutes. Reed led Adrian with 14 points on 5-of-13 shooting with two triples. He also had four assists and four steals on the night. Sean Gallant tossed in 10 points and grabbed seven boards in 32 minutes.

Adrian shot 37.3 percent (22-of-59) for the game while Alma connected on 51.2 percent (21-of-41) from the field including a 12-of-19 effort in the second half. The Scots made 7-of-12 from behind the arc compared to 6-of-17 for the Bulldogs. Only 12 free throws were shot in the game with Adrian going 3-of-5 and Alma shooting 5-of-7.
