NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The women's lacrosse season started off with heartbreak as Christopher Newport's Kaitlin Quigley scored with 34 seconds left to give CNU a 18-17 win over the Bulldogs in the season opener for AC.
Adrian led 17-16 with 7:09 remaining in the game after an unassisted goal by Olivia Duncan. CNU's Meghan Harkey tied the game at 17-17 with 4:03 left unassisted and then Quigley scored a man-up goal unassisted for the game-winner as Christopher Newport improved to 1-0.
The Bulldogs were led by junior Rachel Johnston who had five points with four goals and one assist. She fired 11 shots with seven on goal and also caused a turnover. Duncan scored three times and also added an assist as she had four shots which were all on net.
Sophomore Cassie Hoyez netted a hat trick on three shots on goal and also caused a turnover. Junior Meghan Reynolds also scored three times on three shots on goal while senior Andrea Soloko added a pair of goals on two shots on net.
Jul Tehovnik made five saves in her first game with the Bulldogs. Adrian outshot CNU, 36-34, for the contest and CNU had a 18-11 edge in ground balls. Adrian was a perfect 11-of-11 in clears.
