ADRIAN, Mich. - Darrell Boldon scored a pair of first period goals and Logan Blackwell added another as the ACHA Division I men's hockey team captured the 2012 GLCHL Playoff Championship with a 3-1 win over regular season champion Oakland University at Arrington Ice Arena. The Bulldogs rode a hot streak into the tournament and won three straight games with a Friday 6-3 win over Western Michigan and a 6-0 Saturday win over Davenport.
The Bulldogs improved to 24-13 overall on the season and entered the tournament ranked 13th in Division I with a national tournament berth likely. They made a case to move up as a higher seed with a great tournament run as the three seed. Adrian has now 13 in a row after stumbling through the middle of the season.
Boldon and the Bulldogs jumped ahead 1-0 at 3:05 of the opening period on the power play. Alex Norman fed Boldon on the play as Adrian got that all important first goal. Blackwell increased the lead to 2-0 at the 17:12 mark of the first from Ryan Bachman and Alex Dobrzeniecki at even strength. The Bulldogs finished off a great period at 18:36 as Boldon's second goal of the period made it 3-0. Dylan Towns had the assist on Boldon's second tally.
The three-goal lead would last all the way until early in the third period when Jacob DeSano scored at 0:31 of the period with an assist by Anthony Colizza. Oakland had a golden opportunity to cut further into the lead at 12:58 of the third as Erik Wentzel took a five-minute major. The penalty kill for the Bulldogs stood tall and did not allow a goal.
Matt Anderson stopped 22-of-23 shots in net for the Bulldogs for a .957 save percentage. Matt Toter did not fare as well stopping 14-of-17 shots for a .824 save percentage. The Bulldogs have one more series against Ohio University next weekend before they find out about their national tournament plans.
