Box Score 2 ADRIAN, Mich. – The Sunday afternoon doubleheader between Adrian College and Kalamazoo College consisted of a blowout and a nail-biter as the Bulldogs luckily won both of those with a 11-0 game one win and a 2-1 game two victory.
Adrian improved to 25-6 overall and 18-2 in the MIAA winning its eighth straight and improving to 10-0 at Nicolay Field this season. The Bulldogs scored in each of the first four innings in the game one rout. The big inning was a seven-run fourth highlighted by a grand slam home run by Sam Fischer over the left field wall. It was Fischer's third long ball of the season and the second by a Bulldog at Nicolay Field this season.
Freshman Eric Schmidt worked five innings of three-hit ball to improve to 5-0. He allowed two walks and struck out three while lowering his season ERA to 2.31. Eric Sims and Craig Steadman also combined on the sixth shutout of the year by the Adrian pitching staff. Sims threw in the sixth inning allowing a hit with a strikeout. Steadman gave up two hits with a walk.
Fischer went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a walk in the opener. Kyle Strawn went 3-for-3 with a run and four RBI including his eighth triple of the season. Garrett Green went 2-for-3 with an RBI double which was his seventh two-bagger of the season. Mike Herzog went 1-for-2 with a sacrifice fly, his fourth of the year.
The nightcap featured a pitcher's duel between Adrian's Brent Greenwood and Kalamazoo's Adam McDowell. Both pitchers gave up a run in the second and each went six innings on the mound. Adrian's run in the second started with a triple by Dom Pompey followed by an infield single by R.J. Rios.
The scored remained 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth when Herzog singled through the right side scoring Rios with the winning run. Kalamazoo had two chances late in the game to either tie the game or take the lead, but Adrian's defense prevented it. In the top of the sixth, David Kamerman led off with a double and was moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt. Eric Glanz then grounded out to Green at second base with the infield playing in and Green threw a strike to home. Jamey Sackett did a great job of blocking the plate and tagged out Kamerman for the second out.
The Hornets also threatened in the top of the seventh against Adrian closer Lucas Willitzer. Tim Lynch was hit by a pitch with one out and Mike McCann hit into a fielder's choice for the second out. Alex Crook then singled to right and pinch runner Anthony Shaheen attempted to go first to third but was gunned out by Andrew DeLuca at third to end the game.
Greenwood improved to 2-1 allowing just three hits and also walked two with four strikeouts. Willitzer picked up his second save by working in the seventh. Sackett was the only Bulldog with multiple hits in game two going 2-for-3 with his fourth double of the season. Herzog's game-winning single extended his hitting streak to five games. Strawn went 1-for-3 in game two and now has hit safely in 15 games. Strawn is also hitting .682 during the team's last 10 games.
