Adrian Falls at Olivet in Final Seconds

OLIVET, Mich. – Adrian College men's basketball has been on the winning side of a game-winning shot this season, but sometimes the game has a way of equaling out. The Bulldogs dropped to 1-3 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association after starting the season 11-0 with a 52-49 loss at Olivet College on Saturday as Dakotah Ellis nailed a three-point shot with 6.6 seconds to play. Olivet improved to 7-8, 2-2 in the MIAA with the win against the 25th-ranked Bulldogs.

Adrian like the Hope game a week ago started off in a big early hole down 12-1 in the first 3:02 of the contest. Adrian called timeout and after a wake-up call scored 10 of the next 12 points to cut the lead to 14-11 at the 12:47 mark of the first half. Olivet went back on the offensive and increased their lead back up to 29-15 with 5:53 left in the half. The Comets led 33-22 at halftime as the Bulldogs shot just 20 percent (6-of-30) from the floor. They kept themselves in the game by going 9-of-13 at the free throw line.

Adrian kicked it up a notch in the second half and started on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to 35-32. Adrian tied the game at 40-40 with 8:11 to go after a bucket by Eric Lewis and took the lead with 7:11 to play after Cody Barnes made a layup. The defenses clamped down after that point and the contest came down to the final minute. Trailing 49-46 with 34 seconds left, Barnes made a big three-pointer leaving Olivet with a chance to take a shot near the end of the game to break the tie. Ellis executed the play and made the winning basket, but Barnes had one last chance missing a tying triple with one second left.

Barnes finished with 11 points marking the four straight game in double figures. Lewis led the team with 13 points in 29 minutes. Sean Gallant led the squad with 11 rebounds and also added 10 points for his second double-double of the season. Adam Meier grabbed 10 boards (3rd double-digit total this season) and scored seven points.
