Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The men's basketball team cracked the top 10 nationally this week for the first time, but Calvin showed why Van Noord Arena is such a tough place to play with a 56-50 win over the No. 7 Bulldogs in the MIAA opener for both clubs on Thursday, Jan. 3. Adrian (11-1, 0-1) was locked down on the offensive end shooting 33.9 percent (19-of-56) from the field overall. Calvin (10-2, 1-0) managed to shoot 39.2 percent (20-of-51) from the floor but were 10-of-24 (41.7 percent) in the second half.
The teams were tied at 25-25 going into the locker room after 20 minutes in an entertaining half which saw eight ties and three lead changes. Calvin built a six-point lead, 35-29, in the first six-plus minutes of the second half and the Bulldogs played from behind for the rest of the game. The Knights built a seven-point advantage, 48-41, with 4:35 to play and Adrian could not get within a single possession.
Eric Lewis scored 11 of his team-high 17 points in the second half. Lewis hit double figures for the 11th time in 12 games this season and went 7-of-14 from the floor and 3-of-4 at the free throw line. Cody Barnes scored 12 points including 2-of-4 from behind the arc. Adrian went just 2-of-11 from deep and also were 10-of-15 at the free throw line.
Calvin was led by 14 points from Tyler Kruis and Bryan Powell. Powell went 6-of-11 in 22 minutes off the bench. The Knights scored 17 points off the bench and 15 points off Adrian turnovers. Adrian will look to regroup on Saturday at 3 p.m. against Hope (6-6, 1-0) in AC's home MIAA opener.
